What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a neurological difference in the structure of an individual's brain.
It is also,
It is also,
- Genetic and can be inherited in multiple family members or it can skip generations.
- Not a rare condition. Males and females are both at risk and are not excluded.
- Can be present with other medical conditions; such as ADHD.
- It does not mean that an individual is 'lazy' or 'dumb'. It simply means these individuals learn differently than traditional whole-group methods and with more specialized multisensory teaching.
- Dyslexia will never go away. HOWEVER, with proper multisensory remediation the dyslexic brain can be rewired and your child can grow to live a normal life and be successful, productive reading adult!
Dyslexia is an academic disability NOT a medical disability
Traditional doctors are not trained in identifying dyslexia characteristics.
Dyslexia is an academic learning disability that is displayed as a difficulty in an individual's ability to read, spell, write, and verbally recall information.
Dyslexia can be identified in a child as young as 4 years of age and can be remediated at any age! From 4 to 104! Due to therapy that is used to rewire the dyslexic brain to become a reading brain.
PARENTS: If you are seeking an evaluation for dyslexia, contact your local school and speak to their on campus Dyslexia Specialist or contact your communities local educational coop. I would also suggest that you seek guidance from a Dyslexia Therapist such as myself.
Dyslexia Therapists are highly trained in methods of teaching and remediation of dyslexia characteristics. These individuals can be teachers working in a school system or in private practice. One way to locate a Dyslexic Therapist is to contact your local school district, universities, and/or recognized dyslexia organizations. Below are a few suggested dyslexia organizations that I am personally associated with and would highly recommend in your search for dyslexia therapy.
